Who We Are

Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
And they’re always glad you came…

Those are the words of the theme song for the television sitcom, Cheers. Wesley Church wants to be that place. John Wesley and the early Methodists placed a strong emphasis on Christian living, on putting faith and love into action. This emphasis on what Wesley referred to as “practical divinity” continues to be a hallmark of Wesley Church today and helps us to become that place.

Here’s a few of the activities that make up who we are:

  • Potato Patch harvest for Food Cupboard Outreach
  • Vacation Bible School
  • Bloomsburg Fair
  • Youth Group
  • Community Friendship Meals
  • Making School Kits for Head Start
  • Making Goodie Boxes for those in College and the Military
  • Quilting Club
  • Prayer Shawl Ministry
  • American Red Cross Blood Drives
  • Limited Access Members (LAMs)
  • Mission Trips
  • Covered Bridge Tours
  • Bible Studies

Here is a quick overview of who we are and what we believe in:

The Mission of Wesley Church is to:
Know… Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
Grow… in faith through worship, prayer, & study.
                    Go… in service to Christ.

The Purpose of Wesley Church is to create disciples who serve Jesus Christ through worship, prayer, gifts and outreach.

In a world of self-absorption, Wesley seeks to bless our world with deeds of compassion, mercy and grace.

Wesley United Methodist Church has served the town of Bloomsburg since 1831 when circuit rider Reverend Alem Brittain delivered his first sermon to a large audience at the schoolhouse on Second and Iron Streets. The church had its home at several locations before settling in at the present site on the corner of Market and Third Streets where the cornerstone was laid in May of 1896. In an effort to enhance the learning experience for both young and old, the education wing and gym were added in 1927. Wesley Church is currently a congregation of well over 1,000 diverse members that continues to provide the highest quality of religious activity for persons of all ages. More history…
